House Passes Trump’s “Big, Beautiful” Budget by ONE VOTE — Will it Survive the Senate?

The Josh Lafazan Show on YouTube - Episode 117

Welcome back to The Josh Lafazan Show, where today we dive into a high-stakes political showdown on Capitol Hill:

The House just narrowly passed Donald Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful” Budget — a sweeping and controversial megabill that cuts across taxes, energy, healthcare, and immigration — by just a single vote. And now it heads to the Senate, where its future is very uncertain.

Let’s break down what just happened, what’s in this bill, and why this moment could define the next phase of Trump’s political power — and raise serious questions about whether our government is functioning at all.

🏛️ HOUSE PASSES BUDGET — BY A THREAD

The House passed the bill just after midnight, in a dramatic late-night vote that saw two Republicans break with their party, one vote “present,” and two GOP members miss the vote entirely — including Rep. Andrew Garbarino, who admitted he literally fell asleep during the roll call.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, backed by former President Donald Trump, pulled off the narrowest of victories — and we’ve got the clip of him announcing the final tally.

Despite Republican cheers, Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries slammed the bill, warning that it guts protections for working and middle-class Americans, especially those relying on Medicaid, Affordable Care Act subsidies, and green energy programs. We show his forceful remarks and break down the economic and moral arguments behind the opposition.

🧾 WHAT’S IN TRUMP’S “BIG, BEAUTIFUL” BUDGET?

This wasn’t just a tax or spending bill — it was a full-scale rewrite of American priorities, packed with last-minute changes in a 42-page “manager’s amendment” designed to get just enough GOP votes. Let’s look at some of the most controversial provisions:

🔹 Trump Accounts (aka MAGA Accounts) — A rebranded tax-sheltered savings plan that’s part policy, part campaign gimmick.
🔹 Cuts to Medicaid — A flashpoint between GOP moderates and Freedom Caucus hardliners.
🔹 Gun Silencers — Eliminates the $200 federal transfer tax and removes them from the National Firearms Act entirely.
🔹 Public Land Sales — Initially allowed sales in Utah and Nevada, but struck after backlash.
🔹 Nuclear Energy Credits — Softened rollback of green energy incentives for advanced reactors.
🔹 Tanning Tax — Initially scrapped, but reinstated after Democrats mocked the move.
🔹 Remittance Tax — Scaled back from 5% to 3.5%, still expected to raise billions.
🔹 Federal Pensions — Proposed changes to retirement calculations were removed.
🔹 Abortion Restrictions — New limits on ACA plans that offer abortion coverage outside cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment.

It’s a bill that tries to please both the far-right and the moderates — but whether that compromise holds in the Senate is a big, open question.

⚖️ WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IN THE SENATE?

This bill now goes to the Senate, where things get even messier. As Politico and Axios report, several GOP Senators are already signaling the bill is dead on arrival unless changes are made.

Here’s the breakdown:

Even if the Senate passes a different version, it will have to go to a conference committee, where House and Senate negotiators must strike a compromise — all while a September debt ceiling crisis looms over their heads.

📉 A GOVERNMENT RUN BY NAPPERS? A CASE FOR AGE LIMITS

One more point that deserves attention: Three Democratic House members have died since March, and now a Republican congressman is literally sleeping through votes.

It’s another stark reminder that America’s leadership is alarmingly old.

Right now:

And we just elected Donald Trump (78) to follow Joe Biden (82) — the two oldest presidents in U.S. history.

It’s time to reignite the conversation around age limits for elected officials — something 79% of Americans support.

After all, we already have age limits for:

Why not Congress?

As our world evolves faster than ever, we need leaders who are in touch with the future — not stuck in the past.
