They prosecute federal crimes, represent the U.S. in civil litigation, and direct federal law enforcement like the FBI.
There are 93 U.S. Attorneys serving 94 judicial districts. The one for Washington, D.C., is arguably one of the most influential in the entire country. And Trump’s nominee for this key role is, simply put, a disaster.
You’d expect controversy from some of Trump’s appointments — but Ed Martin crosses every line.
Columnist and former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance highlights just how unqualified and dangerous Martin is:
🟥 He supported the “Stop the Steal” movement and immediately moved to dismiss January 6th-related cases upon becoming interim U.S. Attorney.
🟥 He fired prosecutors working those cases and began investigating DOJ officials who brought charges against Capitol rioters — even those convicted of seditious conspiracy.
🟥 He has no experience trying a single case in court. That’s not an exaggeration — he literally has never argued a case before a jury.
🟥 He falsely claimed that 40% of his legal work was litigation. When pressed, he admitted under oath he’s never gone to trial.
🟥 He cited an active case from his interim office as part of his “experience”—a clear ethical violation.
If this weren’t troubling enough, Martin has made public statements that could directly jeopardize open cases—comments that fly in the face of DOJ policy and the foundational legal principle of presumption of innocence.
Let’s be blunt: Ed Martin’s behavior and public record aren’t just controversial — they’re disqualifying.
🎙️ In leaked audio from CNN, Martin makes repugnant comments about abortion, and doubles down with racist, misogynistic remarks, including a claim that he was fired because of “crazy Black ladies on CNN.”

Former President Barack Obama once reminded U.S. Attorneys that while they may have been appointed by him, they serve the American people, not the President.
Trump’s nomination of Ed Martin is the complete opposite of that ethos. It’s not about justice. It’s about loyalty, retribution, and undermining accountability—especially for January 6th rioters and Trump allies under federal scrutiny.
Senator Thom Tillis deserves credit for standing up and saying enough is enough. But one senator isn’t enough. It’s time for others—on both sides of the aisle—to speak up and vote this nomination down.
